What are you growing?
May 6, 2009
Hi everybody!
I’m curious what everyone is planting, with some of the updates that Liz has posted it sounds like we’ve got quite a variety.
So far we have planted: Potatoes, Beets, Peas, Carrots, Leeks, Onions (thanks Liz), Parsley (thanks Laurel), Blueberries, Strawberries, Peppers, Tomatoes (hoping they’ll be okay), Sunflowers, and two little Lavender plants. Oh, and hops (transplanted from overwintering in pots in our garden)! I’ve started a bunch of seeds at home too, my kitchen counter has been taken over! We’ve started cantaloupe, cucumbers, green beans, pumpkins, peppers and sunflowers. We’re feeling ambitious for people who haven’t grown much beyond tomatoes and zucchini in the past. How about you?
Karen, David, Duncan and Sophie Rutherford (we’re the one’s at the bottom below the shed) (I’m blogging too, mostly as an archive for our records, with thanks to Liz for starting all this up: bainbridgemom.wordpress.com)

Hi Karen,
There is quite a bit of interest in your “hops” crop. It will be fun to see how you do with that. Are you coming to the seeds and starts exchange this Saturday?

Hi Liz,
Unfortunately we won’t be able to make it to the seeds & starts exchange (Duncan has a t-ball game at 11:40 and we need to be there early for practice).
If we have any seeds or starts left over I will be happy to share them with anyone who needs some!
The peas are sprouting, and I’m feeling irrational exhuberance!

I like the irrational exhuberance part! You have worked hard, looking forward to seeing the fruits of your labor
See you soon.

Hi all!
Boy, I’ll do my best to come up with a complete list.
We purchased some starts from Persephone & Butler Green, including cardoon, artichoke, munchkin broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, rainbow chard, strawberries, celery, and sweet peas (the non-edible flowers).
From seed & already in the ground: carrots (many of which washed into the path & are now growing there!), rainbow chard, sugar snap peas, sunchokes (a.k.a. jerusalem artichokes), various potatoes, quinoa (mostly b/c it’s beautiful, but maybe we’ll harvest some), calendula, rapini (a.k.a. broccoli raab), catnip, snow peas, 2 types of mesclun mixes (baby & regular), echinacea, wildflowers, poppies, kale, mustard greens, sage, parsley, dill, creeping thyme, and oregano.
I have a few starts going at home under a regular ceiling-mounted lightbulb: cucumber, more dill, cantaloupe, 2 types of low-acid tomatoes (one bush & one pole), watermelon, sugar pie pumpkins, zucchini, and delicata squash. I started them very late, and the watermelon & pumpkins haven’t come up yet. I may try again with them.
I still intend to plant from seed: corn, 2 types of green beans, one wax bean, & sunflowers.
I am not feeling motivated to deal with the grass & rock removal & soil prep for the warm weather veggies. We have so much going on right now, that I just don’t have the energy! I guess it’s lucky that I got the starts going a bit late so there is no rush
Everything is doing well for the most part. I am SO excited that the sunchokes & potatoes came up beautifully this week (though 2 sunchokes are in the path). Oddly the wildflowers & poppies haven’t done a thing; I say “oddly”, because I thought they would be the easiest ones to grow… since they’re wild!!! That goes to show how much I know. I’m not giving up on them yet, though. The parsley hasn’t come up yet, but I think it had a very long germination time. The kale isn’t terribly happy so far. The brussels sprouts, munchkin broccoli, and cauliflower looked wilty when we came by yesterday; I have no idea why, but I suspect that they got too dry. The quinoa, echinacea, and sweet peas may or may not survive the many errant footprints. I have my finger crossed, as I REALLY REALLY wanted to have beautiful flowers to attract the bees & butterflies to everyone’s veggies. Plus, they just make me happy
That’s it from this overzealous novice! I look forward to hearing what everyone else is doing!
Best wishes to everyone!
Laurel (& Ryan & Wes)
